We have worked with hundreds of talented and dedicated volunteers to deepen the welcome of newcomers to our community. Learn more about our volunteer needs and process of becoming a volunteer below.

SIGN UP FOR A VOLUNTEER ORIENTATION

Our Volunteer Orientation gives an overview of us as an organization, details on how you can volunteer, and the process for becoming a volunteer. They last about 45 minutes on Zoom. Sign-up below.

Wednesday, March 12, 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM

Wednesday, March 26, 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM

Having trouble submitting the form or don’t see a date that works for you? Email volunteers@reestablishrichmond.org for support.

Submit Application + Background Check

After volunteers attend a Volunteer Orientation, they will be sent links to fill out the Volunteer Applicaiton and Background Check. The application is the space for us to get to know you, your talents, and your areas of interest. The background check is done through a third-party provider called Sterling Volunteers.

Onboarding Reading

Embedded in our Volunteer Resources is a series of required training readings designed to give volunteers the tools they need to effectively make an impact in our client’s lives. These pages form the core of our Volunteer Portal and include the topics: Building Cultural Awareness, Forming Healthy Helping Relationships, Effective Communication with Non-native English Speakers, Trauma Informed Care, Guidelines for Driving Clients, Guidelines for working around Children. Specialized trainings will be held periodically for various volunteer roles.

Check-in with Volunteer Engagement Team

The last step will be a short one-on-one check-in with our Volunteer Engagement Team to clarify any questions and begin to work on matching volunteers with volunteer needs with the organization.

AMANDA SIRIANNI

Volunteer since 2018

Like the majority of Americans, my family has immigrant origins. I found that welcoming new neighbors to our community, be they refugee or immigrant, was a wonderful way to "pay it forward" and show how welcoming the greater Richmond area truly is.

CARRIE CHEATHAM

Volunteer since 2019

It’s been almost a year since I sat down in Zainab’s home for the very first time to teach English. In that “almost” year we have shared so many confused looks, laughs, family video calls, and hugs. In that “almost” year we have learned so much about each other through Google images, small sentences, and scrapbooks. You see, it’s not just about teaching – it’s about creating a comfortable and safe space that enables learning to happen more openly.

SADAF MORADI

Volunteer since 2020

I started volunteering at the beginning of this year with 2 different clients all virtually through WhatsApp and Zoom, each an hour per week. Volunteering with this organization has truly been a very rewarding experience and one that I hope to continue working with into the foreseeable future. I love the incredibly diverse community this organization serves and the amazing resources it provides to both the clients and the volunteers.

My advice to new volunteers interested in English tutoring is to have patience, dedication, and always be your student’s number one supporter!
