Citizenship is a legal immigration status that gives people certain rights, privileges, and protections. Someone who is born in the United States is automatically a U.S. citizen. There are several other ways to become a naturalized citizen. If you have been a legal permanent resident of the U.S. for 5 years, you may be eligible to begin the citizenship process.
